DUPRI Scholar and Professor of Statistical Science Jerry Reiter: Protecting Privacy in a Blended Data World

In this Links Lecture, sponsored by the American Statistical Association, Professor of Statistical Science and DUPRI Scholar Jerry Reiter will discuss integration of data from multiple sources, often known as data blending, which is a core activity for many statistical agencies. According to Reiter: "It promises to become increasingly prevalent in the future. However, data blending creates challenges for protecting the privacy and confidentiality of data subjects' identities and sensitive attributes, especially when the agency responsible for the blending seeks to disseminate public-use data products. In this talk, I describe some of the challenges to protecting confidentiality with blended data products. Along the way, I discuss techniques that statistical agencies have traditionally used to reduce disclosure risks in public use data files, as well as newer methods like synthetic data, verification/validation services, and differential privacy. I conclude with a set of big picture questions intended to motivate research on how agencies can facilitate access to confidential, blended data."

Science at the Intersection of Genetics, Identity, and Health

DUPRI is co-sponsoring the Science at the Intersection of Genetics, Identity, and Health workshop, organized by Hermann Pontzer, Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology. The workshop will take place Friday, November 4 at the JB Duke. In-person registration will be limited and offered on a first-come first-serve basis, but the workshop will also be accessible virtually via Zoom! For those attending in-person, there will be catered coffee/light breakfast and lunch available.

International Perspectives on Parenting and Child Development

Researchers from the Parenting Across Cultures longitudinal study will present their findings on the effects of the pandemic, health-compromising and risky behaviors, education, work, and intimate partnerships during this half-day conference. For 14 years, research teams in nine countries have been collecting dozens of measures every year from parents and children in China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States. The study began in 2008 with nearly 1,500 8-year-old children and their mothers and fathers.

Stata Applied Methods Talks

DUPRI will be hosting Chuck Huber from StataCorp on Tuesday, October 4 to give three talks on applied methods using Stata. The talks will be Introduction to Mediation Analysis, Multilevel/Longitudinal Modeling, and Latent Class Analysis. In addition to the talks, lunch will be provided. To attend this event, you must RSVP to Laura Satterfield no later than Monday, October 3.
